Foreign Minister leads delegation to UN forum

Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani yesterday led the Bahrain delegation to the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78), in New York.

The session was held under the theme ‘Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all’, chaired by current session President Dennis Francis, and with the participation of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The Bahrain delegation included Oil and Environment Minister and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs Dr Mohammed Bin Daina, Sustainable Development Minister Noor Al Khulaif, and senior officials.

GCC-UK

Dr Al Zayani took part in a GCC-UK joint ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the UNGA session. The GCC delegation was headed by Omani Foreign Minister and the ministerial council’s current session chairman Sayyid Badr Albusaidi. Also present were GCC foreign ministers and Secretary-General Jasem Al Budaiwi.

The UK delegation was headed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs James Cleverly.

The meeting discussed relations between the GCC countries and the UK, which are witnessing development in light of mutual keenness to advance co-operation in political, security, economic and development fields to more comprehensive levels.

The officials also discussed the latest developments on regional and international levels and their impact on regional and global security, stability and peace.

Bahrain’s Ambassador to the UK Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa and Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Jamal Al Rowaiei were present.

Dr Al Zayani took part in another joint GCC ministerial meeting with Association of Caribbean States (ACS). A memorandum of understanding for co-operation and a joint action plan was signed between Mr Al Budaiwi and ACS, represented by Rodolfo Sabonge.

The Foreign Minister also attended a reception hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on the occasion of his country’s 50th anniversary of UN membership.

Dr Al Zayani conveyed greetings from His Majesty King Hamad, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to Mr Scholz, and their wishes of further progress and prosperity to Germany and its people.

The minister congratulated Mr Scholz on the anniversary, and praised Germany’s role in supporting the efforts and objectives of the UN. He also commended the relations of friendship and co-operation between Bahrain and Germany, and steady development thanks to the common interest of their leaderships.

The Foreign Minister later met Argentina’s Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship Minister Santiago Cafiero.

They reviewed friendly relations and ways of promoting and developing them to benefit the two countries and peoples.

The two ministers signed an MoU on political consultations to further advance co-operation.
